Location This hotel is located in the heart of Cairo's shopping, business and theatre districts and is within walking distance of some of the city's most celebrated attractions. The Egyptian museum, Opera Square, Khan Khalili Bazaar, the Abdine palace and the river Nile are just a few steps away and the Cairo underground train network is easily accessible for other destinations. Facilities Built at the turn of the century as the baths of the Egyptian royal family, the hotel served for many years as a colonial British Officers' Club before being purchased by a Swiss hotelier as an part of the legendary Shepherd's Hotel and converted into the Hotel-Maison Suisse. The hotel is a venerable Cairo institution, with a rich history and offering warm hospitality - a veritable oasis of tranquillity amid the bustle of central Cairo. Today, the hotel's guest rooms retain an ambiance of faded grandeur and the hotel's famous Barrel bar remains a popular Cairo rendezvous. More recently, the establishment has been featured in a number of Egyptian and Hollywood films. Further facilities on offer to guests at this air-conditioned establishment include a 24-hour reception and 24-hour check-in/check out service, a currency exchange facility, a cafe, a disco and a TV lounge. Rooms The accommodation is clean, with fairly worn carpets and bathrooms which are in need of renovation. Meals The bar, with its eclectic, old-world style, polished floorboards, large lounges, beer-barrel furniture and mounted animal horns, is the highlight of the hotel.
